Shabby Fabrics is an established online quilting brand founded by Jennifer Bosworth. This self-initiated concept campaign explores how a purpose-built brand mascot could expand the company's marketing while preserving the authenticity and trust that have made the brand successful. I developed Shabby, a quilted-patchwork mascot, and built a complete campaign around her, from audience strategy and character development to a cinematic hero film and supporting social content.

The Challenge

Shabby Fabrics has built a loyal following through Jennifer Bosworth's on-camera tutorials and educational content. While that personal connection is one of the company's greatest strengths, it also creates a practical limitation: the volume of content the brand can produce is directly tied to the founder's time and availability.

The opportunity was to create an ownable brand asset that could dramatically increase the amount of engaging content produced without replacing the founder or diminishing the authenticity customers value.

The project began with the audience. Shabby Fabrics primarily serves quilters aged fifty and older, most of whom are women in their sixties who value craftsmanship, creativity, and the personal satisfaction of making something by hand. They actively consume YouTube tutorials and participate in quilting communities across Facebook and other social platforms. To create a mascot that would immediately feel familiar and emotionally approachable, I researched the companion dog breeds most closely associated with this demographic and built the character around the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a breed widely recognized for its gentle temperament, affectionate personality, and enduring popularity with older adults.

Every creative decision that followed was designed around how this audience engages, favoring a warm, welcoming, and unhurried tone while adapting the content for short-form platforms that help introduce the brand to the next generation of quilters.

Strategy

The entire campaign was built around one simple strategic idea:

The mascot is literally made from the product the brand sells.

Shabby is stitched entirely from patchwork quilts, making every appearance a natural showcase for the brand's fabrics, patterns, and craftsmanship. Rather than functioning as a traditional mascot, she becomes a storytelling device that naturally integrates the products into every piece of content.

More importantly, Shabby solves a real business challenge. She becomes a scalable brand asset that extends beyond the founder's availability while creating valuable intellectual property the company could grow into future fabric collections, quilt kits, children's books, merchandise, seasonal campaigns, licensing opportunities, and community initiatives.

Just as importantly, she never competes with Jennifer's role as the face of the company. Every adventure is designed to spark curiosity and engagement before leading audiences back to Jennifer, her tutorials, and her products. Sidekick and doorway, never a replacement.

Execution

I scripted and directed the campaign's origin film, telling the story of Shabby being cut, pieced, sewn, and brought to life from bolts of fabric. Using AI, I generated the imagery and video before completing the final edit with cinematic pacing, custom sound design, music, sewing-room ambience, and a warm voiceover that closes with the line: "Every Shabby quilt has a little life sewn in."

The campaign expands into six 4:5 social ads built around the company's core product categories, including quilt kits, Block of the Month, precuts, seasonal collections, notions, and free tutorials. Each piece follows a consistent messaging framework while highlighting a different part of the product ecosystem, creating a cohesive campaign that can scale across social platforms while reinforcing a memorable brand personality.

Business Impact

This concept demonstrates how AI can be used to build a scalable brand ecosystem rather than simply generate content. By introducing an ownable mascot, the campaign transforms a founder-dependent marketing model into one capable of producing a continuous stream of recognizable, story-driven content while preserving Jennifer Bosworth as the trusted face of the brand.

More than a mascot, Shabby is a long-term brand asset. She creates opportunities to strengthen customer engagement, support product launches, introduce seasonal campaigns, and extend the brand into merchandise, licensing, educational experiences, and future product lines. Every appearance naturally showcases the company's products while reinforcing a recognizable visual identity and deepening the emotional connection with customers.

The project illustrates how AI-powered creative production, guided by strategic brand thinking, can help established brands increase content output, build valuable intellectual property, and strengthen long-term brand equity without sacrificing the authenticity that made customers loyal in the first place.
